We had a real can-do crew that operated at reduced manning until our Reserve crew came aboard for their drills. It was an honor that I realized later in life and now treasure. I served with many great men aboard the Constant. During the time I served on Constant we went to Catalina Island, the Portland Rose Festival, Victoria/Vancouver, BC, and San Francisco. Started out as a Fireman Apprentice then struck for Sonar Tech with the help of STG2 Haverstick and STGC Schoep. Fellas, it was an honor to serve in deck department. I remember us streaming all the difficult gear and stopping it off. I served with an Outstanding Crew that were honored and unlimited in their talent. The name says it all! I remember operating with skeleton crew and standing many port and starboard watches. That was the longest two years of my life not to mention the two additional years spent in reserves aboard the Constant. I learned quite a bit being on an independent duty billet!!!Ī-Division, Aft Engine Room. Worked with QM1 Wholaver!!!! Ens Schultz and LT Duffy. I remember working with Mark Griffin, Brian Barnes, Cheif hedgecoth,and Mike Fickling Mostly. To those who sailed onboard, Aloha from Hawaii. For three and a half years, I may have turned green but proud to say, "An iron man on wooden ship". She was a rough baby at sea, but I never gave up on her. It will be interesting how every turned out. have been wanting to get hold of some of the men that i was with on the Constants MSO 427 and Implicid MSO 455. I REMEMBER THE CONSTANT DUTY ROTATION, I REMEMBER SN FRED DAUGHERTY HE WAS PRIOR SERVICE ARMY, WENT MANY TIMES TO MEXICO WITH HIM AND SN FINK. I worked on Deck, started as SR and finished as SN and became Torpedomans mate and transferred to the USS Dixon AS-37 at points Loma sub base, advanced to TM2 and left navy after enlistments ended and joined US Airforc Al was best known for always trying to piss off the Capt and not working. I just lost him today 01/04/13 he died of cancer. I left the ship in 1982 but remained friends with SN Allan Fink for 34 years as best friends.
